Lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides are chemically stable for long periods when stored correctly, but that stability changes the moment a compound is reconstituted into solution. Improper handling at either stage — before or after reconstitution — is one of the most common causes of degraded or inconsistent research results. This guide covers the practical handling steps we recommend to the researchers we supply.
Peptide bonds are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation and aggregation, and all three processes accelerate with heat, light and moisture. In lyophilised form, a peptide has no solvent for these reactions to occur in, which is why freeze-dried compounds are comparatively stable at −20°C for extended periods. Once reconstituted into an aqueous solution, degradation pathways become active again, and the usable window shortens dramatically.
Reconstitution should always be performed with bacteriostatic water (water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol), not sterile water alone, since the added preservative inhibits bacterial growth across repeated draws from the same vial. Standard technique:
Once in solution, store the vial at 2–8°C (standard refrigeration, not freezing) and protect it from light — an amber vial or a fridge drawer away from direct light exposure is sufficient. Most reconstituted peptides remain stable for approximately 28 days under these conditions, though this varies by compound. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles entirely: refreezing a reconstituted peptide accelerates aggregation and is one of the fastest ways to lose activity.
The errors we see most often in research settings are: reconstituting with plain sterile or bacteriostatic-free water and using the full vial in one sitting rather than sealing between draws; leaving reconstituted solution at room temperature for extended periods between uses; and storing lyophilised (unreconstituted) vials in a standard fridge rather than a freezer, which shortens shelf life significantly compared to −20°C storage. Label vials clearly with the reconstitution date so the 28-day window is easy to track across a lab.

Correct storage and reconstitution technique preserves that verified purity through to the point of use; poor handling can undermine it regardless of how the compound tested on arrival.
